Yuma Proving Ground is a United States Army installation and is one of the largest in the world. Located about 30 miles northeast of Yuma, the area is primarily used for testing military equipment. Quite large, Yuma Proving Ground encompasses 1,307.8 square miles in the Sonoran Desert.

3,000 people work at the Yuma Proving Ground, most of whom are civilians. Employees at the Yuma Proving Ground conduct tests on most weapons systems employed as part of the ground combat arsenal. For instance, one year will generally see over 500,000 artillery, mortar, and missile rounds.

The area gets about 3 inches of rain per year and is otherwise saved from noise and urban development. Yuma Proving Ground received its full name and was designed as a Major Range and Test Facility Base by 1974.
