About Sheppard AFB, TX
Sheppard Air Force Base is under the jurisdiction of the United States Air Force. It is located around five miles from Wichita Falls, Texas, and is the largest training base within the Air Education and Training Command. It consists of roughly 6,000 acres of land and has a population of around 30,000 people.
The base - then just 300 acres - was opened in late 1941 under the U.S. Army Air Corps as a training center. Basic training was carried out on the site throughout the Second World War, and it rapidly expanded during that period. Its population peaked at the end of the war, as it served as a separation center for troops being discharged.
Today, Sheppard is home to various USAF training programs, including the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program. Its primary unit is the 80th Flying Training Wing. It conducts training of both pilots and support personnel.
