About Peterson AFB, CO
Located in Colorado Springs, Peterson Air Force Base acts as the home to several major military installations, including the North American Aerospace Defense Command as well as the United States Northern Command. Built in 1942, the base has been a key part of the United States missile defense program for several decades.
Peterson Air Force Base is home to the 21st Space Wing, which specializes in early warning missile defense operations. Other units at the base include the 302d Airlift Wing and 561st Network Operations Squadron. The base is named after 1st Lieutenant Edward J. Peterson, an Operations Officer who died in an accident at the airfield in 1942.
The base is currently under the command of Colonel Douglas A. Schiess, who leads the 21st Space Wing. Over 6,000 active duty personnel, and more than 10,000 family members are assigned to Peterson Air Force Base.
