About NWS Yorktown, VA
Yorktown, Virginia, is home to Naval Weapons Station (NAVWPNSTA) Yorktown. The location is steeped in colonial history. The United States Navy acquired the land for the installation in 1918, after World War I began. It was originally the home of the Navy Mine Depot. In 1958, on the installation's 40th birthday, it was renamed to reflect its broader role in the context of the Navy. Today NAVWPNSTA Yorktown supports the Atlantic Fleet with ordinance and supplies.
NAVWPNSTA Yorktown houses 37 tenant commands including the Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group, Navy Munitions Command, Navy Cargo Handling Battalion One, Naval Ophthalmic Support and Training, the Fleet Industrial Supply Center, and the Marine Corps Security Force Regiment.
Over 31,000 people are employed at NAVWPNSTA Yorktown. A little over half of the employees are white-collar workers, while the rest are blue-collar workers.
