Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division (NSA Crane) is a United States Navy installation established near Bloomington, Indiana in 1941. The base hosts around 3,300 permanent employees, but covers 108 square miles of space. This makes it the third largest naval base on the planet by geographic area.
NSA Crane hosts a grove of white oak trees titled Constitution Grove, the lumber from which is used in the maintenance and care of the USS Constitution. NSA Crane hosts 14 separate commands and divisions, in accordance with the USN initiative to focus on multi-functional bases that began in the late 1990s.
NSA Crane is primarily focused on research, development, and engineering of advanced systems. Activities at NSA Crane can be divided into three broad categories. Strategic Missions consists of any deterrent or force-projection activity. Electronic Warfare/Information Operations is anything to do with the military application of electromagnetic energy. Special Missions supports special operations activities.
