About Naval Surface Warfare Center, MD
Charles County, Maryland is home to the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head Division (NSWC IHD). The NSWC specializes in energetics, which include explosives and reactive materials. Information collected at NSWC IHD enhances military weaponry and propulsion capabilities. Research conducted at this Navy facility is utilized by the Army, Air Force, and Marines as well.
Scientists and energetics specialists working at the NSWC are responsible for the research and development of over 60% of our military's energetics. Approximately 75% of the explosive technologies used by the US military today were developed at NSWC IHD. The facility not only houses research and development but also maintains training and testing facilities. This site is at the forefront of the Department of Defense's Ordnance Disposal Technology Program.
There are over 1,700 employees at the NSWC Indian Head Facility. Over half of these workers are physicists, engineers, chemists who specialize in energetics.
