About NSB Kings Bay, GA
Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay is located near the town of St. Marys, Georgia. It is run by the United States Navy and encompasses 16,000 acres, 4,000 of which are ecologically protected wetlands. Kings Bay is a major USN installation with a population of more than 15,000 military members and civilian contractors. It has three commands: Strategic Weapons Facility, Atlantic, Trident Refit Facility, and Trident Training Facility.
Kings Bay was first acquired by the U.S. Army in the early 1950s for use as an ammunition shipping depot. It was transferred to the Navy in 1974 when the American ballistic missile submarine fleet was removed from Spain via treaty.
Kings Bay currently serves as the home port for all of the Ballistic and Guided Missile Submarines of the Atlantic Fleet. The base was the result of the largest peacetime operation ever undertaken by the USN, and it is currently home to ten Ohio-class submarines.
