Located in San Diego, California, Naval Base Point Loma is operated by the United States Navy. The base houses a Naval Mine, Submarine Base, Fleet Combat Training Center and Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command. As such, the base is a forerunner in naval research and technology.
The site of Naval Base Point Loma fell under the jurisdiction of the United States Navy in 1959. Its primary function was to serve as a center for training and housing submarine fleets. The site was not designated Naval Base Point Loma until 1998, when seven military installations consolidated to form the naval base.
Naval Base Point Lima is considered one of the most diverse naval bases in the country. The population of the base is composed of 22,000 military and civilian employees, primarily engaged in technological pursuits. The base still fulfills its historic responsibility, housing a Submarine Base and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command.
