About NAS Oceana, VA
Naval Air Station Oceana is also known as Apollo Soucek Field and operates as a United States Navy Master Jet Base and military airport. It is located near Virginia Beach, Virginia, and is the only Master Jet Base on the East Coast.
NAS Oceana includes Dam Neck Annex and has over 10,500 active Navy personnel and over 4,500 civilian personnel. It houses F/A-18 Hornets and Super Hornets, with 16 squadrons used for deployment on naval carriers for combat and two are permanent fixtures on NAS Oceana. The overall mission of NAS Oceana is to be a Shore-Based Readiness Integrator, which means training and deployment of strike fighter squadrons.
NAS Oceana was opened in 1943, but in the 1950s received Master Jet Base status. It spans over 6,000 acres, though the obstruction clearances and flight easements add an additional 4,000 acres. NAS Oceana is one of the biggest air stations in the world and has four runways.
