About NAS Jacksonville, FL
Naval Air Station Jacksonville, also called NAS Jax, is located just a few miles south of Jacksonville, Florida. Though the location has been used by the U.S. Military since World War I, it was only commissioned as Naval Air Station Jacksonville in October of 1940. During World War II, the Air Station underwent massive expansion, including the addition of three runways, seaplane runways, a hospital, and a prisoner-of-war compound.
The largest Navy base in the Southeast and third largest in the nation, NAS Jax is a naval activity hub that employees 23,000 personnel. In 2012, the installation received the 2012 Presidential Excellence Award, and in 2013, the Commander, Navy Installations Command Excellence Award.
On-base support facilities include pilot training, a maintenance depot, a Naval hospital, a fleet industrial supply center, a commissary, Navy Exchange, and recreational facilities for sailors and their families.
