About McEntire ANG Base, SC
McEntire Air National Guard Base is located about 15 miles southeast of Columbia, S.C. It is affiliated with the South Carolina Air National Guard and owned by the U.S. Air Force. It was established in 1946 and named for Brigadier Gen. Barnie B. McEntire, Jr., who was the first commander and first general officer of the South Carolina Air National Guard.
About 1,250 people train at McEntire Air National Guard Base. The base is home to the 169th Fighter Wing, as well as the 245th Air Traffic Control Squadron and the 59th Aviation Troop Command.
The South Carolina Air National Guard has been called to deploy during five major battles: during the Korean War, during the Berlin Crisis, for Operation Desert Shield / Storm, for Operation Enduring Freedom, and in support of the War on Terrorism.
