About McConnell AFB, KS
McConnell AFB is operated by the United States Air Force and is located just four miles away from the central business district of Wichita in southeastern Kansas. McConnell was built in 1941 and has been in continual use ever since.
The host unit to McConnell AFB is the 22d Air Refueling Wing, which refuels various aircraft and provides other support services. It is also home to the Air Force Reserve Command's 931st Air Refueling Group and the Kansas Air National Guard's 184th Intelligence Wing.
McConnell has a rich history of aviation and also of interaction with the civilian community, having built B-29 Superfortress aircraft in the 1940s. It is also known as the home of the Kansas Aviation Museum, which was formerly the Wichita Municipal Airport.
