Navy Gateway Inns and Suites is the Navy's official lodging operation for service members on temporary duty.

NGIS provides professionally managed, business-based programs that contribute to mission readiness through quality services geared for a mobile military community.

This position is located at the Navy Gateway Inns and Suites on NNSY in Portsmouth Virginia.

The candidate selected for this position will serve as a Gardener.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Requires knowledge of seasonal gardening tasks and procedures.

A general knowledge of gardening tasks and procedures.

Knowledge of environmental rules and regulations concerning procedures, equipment, commonly used chemicals and basic safety is required.

Ability to detect plant diseases and/or unusual plant growth.

Ability to use a variety of hand and power operated tools, such as seeders, spreaders edger's, hedge trimmers pruning shears and sprayers.

Ability to use a variety of basic hand tools, portable power tools, hand /power operated garden tools and equipment such as seeders, spreaders, edger’s, hedge trimmers, pruning shears and sprayers.

A minimum of 6 months experience in basic grounds and building maintenance is preferred.

Must possess basic math and reading skills.

Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing in English.

Must possess a welcoming manner and positive attitude demonstrate effective communication skills; professionally interact with guests; answering guest questions concerning hotel facilities and provide information about local attractions Provide assistance in handling customer complaints, involving management as necessary.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience.

You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Work is performed primarily outdoors working in direct sunlight.

Frequently, and subject to weather conditions including heat, cold rain, snow, wet and wind.

Although hazards are minimized through the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) the employee will be subjected to standing, walking, turning, twisting, stooping, bending pushing, pulling, reaching, climbing, running power mowers on grades or pushing heavy wheelbarrow loads of cement lifting or carrying luggage, etc. and lifting of items weighing up to 45 lbs. unassisted higher weights with assistance.

Some physical activities are prolonged in nature.

FACTOR 9 WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is primarily performed outdoors and incumbent is subject to hot/cold weather, sun, rain, dirt, mud and sometimes to chemical sprays and dusts.

Extreme temperature and weather conditions may exist when working outdoors.

Special care is required to avoid serious injuries.

Must wear issued Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and protective gear.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS This position may be designated ALPHA personnel for inclement weather or in the interest of national security and may be required to report for work when other employees are excused.

This position is subject to the possibility of workdays on weekends and holidays, as well as rotating shifts, often consisting of other than normal duty hours.

The staff member may be recalled to duty and/or required to work overtime, including on an emergency basis.

May be required to possess a valid state driver's license, as travel to other facilities may be required within the normal scope of duties.

In order to verify fitness for duty, a complete physical examination may be required.

This position is subject to a favorable National Agency check (NAC).
