About Lackland AFB, TX
San Antonio, Texas is home to the only military training camp for the United States Air Force. The installation is on four and a half miles with 110,000 transient active duty personnel, their families and civilian workers. This has been a training hub since 1941 with a joint base consolidation in 2005 with Fort Sam Houston, Camp Bullis, and Randolph AFB.
The United States Air Force is the hosting military branch to the 502d Installation Support Group, Inter-American Air Force Academy, and Defense Language Institute. Training is the main mission of this facility that also includes military working dogs.
One concrete runaway has a length of 11,550 feet, which is used for training Air Force reservists and national guardsmen. In 1951, surveillance was added to the mission with the Joint Surveillance System designation as a radar station. Occasionally, Lackland serves as a shelter for minors of illegal immigrants.
