Kirtland Air Force Base is located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and is the sixth largest installation in the United States Air Force. It's the home of the Nuclear Weapons Center and employs more than 23,000 people, which includes over 4,200 active members of the Air Force.

The base was named for Col. Roy Kirtland, who organized airplane mechanics during World War II and served as facilities inspector with regard to aviation. His death in 1941 led to the naming less than a year later, upon the base's official opening. At the time of that inaugural, the base encompassed 2,000 acres, but has expanded to more than 51,000 acres.

During the Manhattan Project that took place during World War II, Kirtland served as the transportation center for the scientists that were working on it. At the conclusion of World War II, it became a place to integrate designs of new weapons.
