About Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA
Joint Base Lewis-McChord is located near Lakewood, Washington and is part of the United States Army Installation Management Command. It is home to over 45,000 service members and civilian workers, supports 120,000 veterans with more than 29,000 family members.
The base was created when the Air Force's McChord Air Force Base and the Army's Fort Lewis merged on February 1, 2010 due to the Base Realignment and Closer Commission recommendations of 2005. Due to its location, it can make use of the Olympia, Seattle, and Tacoma ports for deploying equipment, as well as having the ability for its Air Force units to conduct humanitarian and combat airlifts.
The base serves several purposes, including supporting active military members, veterans, and the general military community. Of course, it also trains new soldiers and maintains reserves in case they are ever needed.
