Located in North Charleston and Goose Creek, South Carolina, Joint Base Charleston is operated by the United States Air Force and Navy. Established in 2010, the base is composed of Charleston Air Force Base and Naval Support Activity Charleston. Commercial airlines of the Charleston International Airport and the base operate on shared runways.
Charleston Air Force Base was established in 1919. It has a history of operating alongside civilian airlines, with Delta and Eastern airlines sharing its 5,000 foot runway during World War II. The Navy Naval Support Activity was commissioned in 1941 to distribute and collect ammunition in the Second World War.
