About Anacostia-Bolling, DC
Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, of which Bolling AFB used to be one part, came about in 2010 as a result of a consolidation with the Naval Support Facility Anacostia. The area was built in 1917 and has been in constant use ever since.
Many major commands have been assigned to what is now Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling over its storied history, including the Director of Military Aeronautic in 1918, Headquarters of the United States Army Air Forces in 1943, and Headquarters of the United States Air Force in 1994.
The Joint Base is controlled by the Unites States Air Force, but has included support elements for Navy aviation since its inception 99 years ago. Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling is one of twelve joint bases created around the country as part of the same 2005 policy aimed at military cost efficiency.
