Portsmouth Naval Shipyard
Located in Seavey Island, Kittery, Maine, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is the oldest naval shipyard operated by the United States Navy.
The shipyard is concerned with repair and modernization of submarines.
Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is one of only four of its kind remaining in the United States.
Established in 1800 under President John Adams, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard played a role in the War of 1812, the Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II.
While the last submarine built at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard was the Sand Lance, in 1969, the shipyard only overhauls, refuels and modernizes vessels at this time.
Awarded for its modern energy management program, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard converted half of its power to natural gas.
The shipyard currently employs over 5,000 civilians and 100 naval officers.
