Naval Air Station Patuxent River

Naval Air Station Patuxent River (also referred to as NAS Pax River) is an aviation facility located on the Chesapeake Bay in St. Mary's County, Maryland.

The station belongs to the United States Navy, and serves as a center for testing and evaluation of naval aviation systems.

Spurred by the onset of the United States' involvement in World War II, the U.S. Navy quickly acquired 6,400 acres of what was once Maryland farmland and began construction in 1942.

In 1943, the station was formally commissioned, and began operations as a testing site.

It later became an integral part of technology development during the Cold War, serving as a home for reconnaissance squadrons in the 1960's.

NAS Pax River employs over 9,800 federal employees and 400 non-appropriated-fund employees.

The station is home to over 4,500 family members and is served by three public school systems.
