Fort Greely

Fort Greely was built to handle the extreme cold that comes with the climate; located in central Alaska, Fort Greely lies approximately 100 miles to the southeast of Fairbanks.

Established in 1942, Fort Greely serves as a United States Army launch site for anti-ballistic missiles.

Named after Medal of Honor recipient Major General Adolphus Greely, the fort currently boasts 60 interceptor missiles, and is one of just two sites in the country to house such missiles.

Lieutenant Colonel Detrice Mosby currently serves as post commander, and the base is home to tenants such as the 49th Missile Defense Battalion and the 59th Signal Battalion.

During World War II, the United States supplied aid to Russia by sending it through Fort Greely and into eastern Russia.

Ever since, Fort Greely has served as a crucial cog in the defense of the United States from attacks emanating from west of the Pacific.
