About Goodfellow AFB, TX
Located in San Angelo, Texas, Goodfellow Air Force Base is part of the United States Air Force Air Education and Training Command. The 17th Training Wing garrisons at Goodfellow under the command of Colonel Michael L. Downs, and serves as a training wing for intelligence personnel as well as firefighters.
Goodfellow Air Force Base is named after 1st Lieutenant John J. Goodfellow, Jr., a World War I pilot who died during a reconnaissance mission in September of 1918. During World War II, Goodfellow produced more than 10,000 skilled, trained pilots. After the war, Goodfellow transitioned towards more intelligence and cryptology training.
As a joint service base, Goodfellow welcomes thousands of different military personnel. The base trains more than 9,000 students every year, and is also home to more than 5,000 active duty personnel and over 12,000 family members. The 17th Medical Group provides care and service to all occupants.
