About Fort Wainwright, AK
Established by the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1939 as Ladd Field, Fort Wainwright was taken over by the newly founded Air Force in 1947. The Fort Wainwright military installation is located in the Tanana River Valley of Alaska's Interior Region close to Fairbanks. The Chena River runs through the fort.
Close to 15,000 people live and work at Fort Wainwright. Since the late 1970s, the fort has participated in the Department of Defense's Installation Restoration Program. The primary focus of the fort's involvement in this program has been to investigate and address contamination in the area. Fort Wainwright has been described as a notable national asset with superior training capabilities.
Fort Wainwright is home to America's Arctic Warriors. Soliders at the fort work and train in temperatures as cold as -50 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter and as warm as 80 degrees in the summer months.
