About Fort Hood, TX
Fort Hood is a military facility located in the Central Texas city of Killeen. Situated almost exactly between Austin and Waco, the post has a population 53,516, making it the largest U.S. military installation in the world. The post belongs to the United States Army, and currently serves as a site to prepare units for deployment abroad.
Because of the rise in tank warfare during World War II, the U.S. Army was searching for a wide-open site that could be utilized for tank destroyer testing and training. In January of 1942, the War Department acquired 108,000 acres in Central Texas and began construction. Now, the multipurpose post serves as home to over 45,000 assigned soldiers and airmen.
Fort Hood currently employs 19,367 civilians and contractors. Because of the post's large population, there are a multitude of job opportunities both inside the facility and in the surrounding area.
