About Columbus AFB, MS
Columbus AFB is operated by the United States Air Force and is located nine miles north of Columbus, Mississippi, which is about 60 miles south of Tupelo. The base was built in 194 1and has been in continual use ever since.
Hundreds of employees work at the base, including 900 personnel who are highly skilled and capable of deploying immediately to support various contingencies around the world. Columbus AFB has been training pilots since World War II. Though the base was closed after the war and through 1951, it has put such a focus on training pilots that about half the pilots in the Air Force currently went through basic training and primary flight training at Columbus AFB.
The host unit at Columbus AFB is the 14th Flying Training Wing, which is assigned to the Air Education and Training Command.
