About Altus AFB, OK
Situated about 4 miles east of Altus, Oklahoma, Altus Air Force Base was first established in 1943. It was briefly inactive from April 1946 to March 1953, but has been in use since it was reopened. The base is the home of the 97th Air Mobility Wing and supports around 1,800 active duty members as well as 1,000 civilians.
Altus is one of the bigger cities in the area and is the seat of Jackson County. The total population of the town was roughly 20,000 during the 2010 census. Primary schooling, child care facilities and other essential services area available on the base.
Altus AFB has been the site of advanced flight training since it was established. Currently, personnel are tasked with providing specialty training programs for C-17 and KC-135 aircrews.
