About Air Force Academy, CO
The United States Air Force Academy is one of the most distinguished military academies in the world. Located a short distance away from Colorado Springs in the state of Colorado, the Air Force Academy was established in April of 1954. The school has a long and storied history throughout the 20th Century. While it is now under the command of the United States Air Force, the academy worked for several decades to become a separate institution from the Army and Navy, just as the Air Force itself took time to become its own separate branch of the military.
The main focus of the Air Force Academy is to train the next generation of Air Force officers. Cadets are chosen from the best applicants, and all must obtain a recommendation from a member of Congress. In addition to military training, cadets can choose from a variety of subjects to study while at the academy, including engineering, science, and the humanities.
The Air Force Academy currently employs a staff of over five hundred people. These individuals are both military personnel and civilians. Cadets at the academy number around four thousand.
