Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service

The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service was reestablished by the Secretary of Agriculture on March 14, 1977, pursuant to authority contained in 5 U.S.C. 301 and Reorganization Plan No. 2 of 1953 (5 U.S.C. app.).

The Service was established to conduct regulatory and control programs to protect and improve animal and plant health for the benefit of man and the environment.

In cooperation with State governments, the agency administers Federal laws and regulations pertaining to animal and plant health and quarantine, humane treatment of animals, and the control and eradication of pests and diseases.

Regulations to prevent the introduction or interstate spread of certain animal or plant pests or diseases are also enforced by the Service.

It also carries out research and operational activities to reduce crop and livestock depredation caused by birds, rodents, and predators.
